Web application server

Whether you want to use PHP, Perl, Java, Ruby or Python, together with Apache and MySQL, Postgresql, DB2 or Oracle, Ubuntu Server Edition can be ready within minutes to start serving your dynamic web pages. Our task based installation process only asks you to provide the default password for the database server and come ready and optimised for the most common workloads in PHP. Serving other web applications in other languages is a package install away.

“Ubuntu and Red Hat pull away, SUSE remains flat by comparison in the US” – Ubuntu 24%, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 21%.
-- Alfresco open source barometer survey of 35,000 community members worldwide

Our web application servers can be found in the largest web environments, serving millions of users daily. Recent studies done by Alfresco are showing that our server is the most deployed OS for their web based content management system, and with the fastest growth. The same has been reported to us by many other software publishers, whether open source or not.

Languages supported:

  • PHP 5
  • Perl
  • Python
  • Ruby on Rails (community supported)
  • Java - Sun Open JDK (community supported)

New in 8.10:

Sun's OpenJDK 6 and Apache's Tomcat 6 are now part of the main repository and a "Tomcat Java Server" profile (tasksel) has been added to set them up during installation. This provides Java application serving capability to make it possible to run light-weight Java web applications under Ubuntu. Our choice of Tomcat in conjunction with OpenJDK 6 is aimed at deployment situations where you need light-weight Java serving capabilities and don't want the complexity of a full Java EE deployment.

Databases supported:

  • MySQL
  • Postgresql
  • DB2 (supported by IBM)
  • Oracle Database Express (community supported)
